Blackberry 10 Making a Comeback!!

It was exciting yesterday when blackberry released the blackberry Z10 that runs on a new Blackberry 10 platform. A comeback for blackberry that aims at transforming mobile communications as a whole as well as its business brand. IOS and Android have dominated the market for the past five years and one wonders if the launch of this new OS is a bit too late.

Unlike its predecessors that ran on RIM, BB10 platform was specifically designed to run completely on touchscreen with new user experience. So, what makes it different?

  • A software keyboard that swipes words to the keyboards and enables prediction and mimics the physical version experience.
  • The BB Hub is a universal inbox that offers you a chance to get all your messages from emails, twitter, Facebook, linked In which can be navigated through swiping because it does not have a physical home or back button.
  • BBM now allows video calling because of the BBM video and voice features.
  • BBM balance that allows users to separate their personal and work life.
  • BB world store that has over 70,000 applications for its users. Not only does it have apps, but video and music as well with popular apps such as twitter, angry birds, Facebook and Skype available.

THE ROLE OF POLITICS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF KONZA CITY

Last week, the president launched the Konza Technopolis during the ground breaking ceremony that was held at Malili, Machakos. This was a significant step in the launching of the project since it made it cease from being just but a mere proposal and actually brought it to life. The phenomenal goal behind it is to ensure that this ICT Park buds an industrialized economy that makes Kenya the ultimate technical hub for many investors who want to bring in local intelligence and a bit of physical presence to the local African market. The project being a private and public partnership, a lot of international investment is necessary because the government will majorly handle matters to do with infrastructure and land allocation (the 5000 acre piece of land). Politics play a huge role on deciding the manner in which the project will sail through.

There are several benefits that come along with this project. Kenya is at a strategic time where its economic liberalization offers opportunity for such commendable growth. Not to forget other key factors such as the revolutionary Mpesa that offers its users the opportunity to spend, transfer, save and most recently get loans just by using their cell phones. The rise of incubation centers has also offered a conducive environment for innovation in the ICT sector with ample research resources and venues of discussion and interactivity among technology enthusiasts.

This project aims at creating at least 200,000 jobs; 80,000 of which will be created in the first phase of development. Most of the beneficiaries are in ICT, transporting and real estate whereby suppliers of building materials such as cement and steel will be essential. Having the idea of spending 850 billion to eventually set up 200,000 jobs through a period of 17 years putting in mind how sluggish government funding can be may not prove to be such an appealing and cost effective venture. This is why international investments are trivial for this idea to bear fruit.

An impressive 250 applications for investments have already been received ranging from multimillion companies such as Safaricom and Huawei, to entities such as banking and financial institutions, shopping malls and international education institutions. With the ground breaking, 18 investors had already wished to start whereas 30 planned to do so after the elections scheduled for March, one of the major reasons Kenyans should anticipate to take part in fair elections void of any form of corruption, biasness and violence.

The choice of leaders we choose is important as well. Countries such as Zimbabwe and Iran suffered from huge losses due to sanctions that were laid upon them. A conscious voter should not put the future of their country in shambles by heading to the ballot box and appointing an individual who faces charges of crime against humanity whether falsely accused or not. It just doesn’t make any sense. While some may argue that the West no longer has a hold on us, consider that pure gibberish. Another school of thought may argue that America and Europe investments are not crucial as compared to those from the Middle East such as China. However, realizing that China will take part more in the construction bit while the States and European countries  will deal with data processing will shade more light on the issue.

Relying on the Middle East as the only source of international investment does not make sense, even without having to do the math. All their transactions are done with the American dollar currency because of the connections with the international banking and wiring systems. Nowhere to run baby!! And what makes us so sure that China will risk the chance of appearing to show no recognition to the ICC authority just to stay in business with us after sanctions have been declared upon us?

Never before have we had the chance to carve our own future so blatantly. We should choose our leaders with a lot of insight. I would like to see Konza grow, and maybe let my kid know that I was there when it was all but a dream. Wouldn’t you? Take charge and practice good judgment and peace. Someone wise once said that the eyes are usually the windows to the soul, and personally, I would not trust a bloodshot eyed president to handle the affairs of this country. Would you?

The new low cost smart phone in the Kenyan market - The “Intel Yolo Smart Phone” Review.

Kenya is privileged to be the launch market for Africa's first Intel-powered smartphone, the “Intel Yolo Phone”. Intel has partnered with Safaricom to introduce the phone to the Kenyan mobile phone market at a reasonable cost of KES. 10,999/=. If you fit the bill, you may want to check out the Yolo as soon as possible

The Yolo phone may not be the thinnest device out there, its dimensions being 110.5*61*12.6mm and weight 132g. It has a 3.5 inch TFT multi-touch capacitive screen with HVGA resolution at 480*320 pixels. From the front view, you can see 4 touch sensitive controls at the bottom (namely Back, Home, Recent & Menu). You may not notice the volume rocker on the left and power button on the right due to their perfect blending. At the top, there is a USB/Power port and the 3.5mm audio jack. The back features a 5.0MP camera, the phone speaker at the bottom, a white “Intel Inside logo” and they just had to put it there too, a white “Safaricom logo”. At the bottom of the phone, there is a slot that to fit your nail in order to remove the rear cover for the purpose of inserting the Battery, Sim card and a microSD.
The phone responds very well to touch and its screen is scratch resistant.  It is supplied with high quality earphones hence good quality sound. The loud speaker is ok too, more like normal quality. Inside the phone’s packaging, apart from the phone and headset, you will find the USB cord, Charger and a “getting started guide”.

Intel Yolo is pre-installed with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Other pre-installed applications include Wireless display app (WiDi) which works by rendering a second virtual display broadcast via WI-FI to a receiver on the TV or PC. Chrome browser and doubletwist are other applications that come bundled in the phone. When the phone is purchased from a Safaricom store, you get a one year subscription to McAfee mobile security application. Not forgetting it also comes with a pre-installed SwiftKey keyboard, Swiftkey for Intel, which is a premium keyboard that makes the typing on phone quite easy and responsive.
The rear facing camera is a 5MP one and comes with a Burst shot feature (enables capture of up to 7 simultaneous photos) and panorama mode feature (for shots in panorama mode).
The Intel Yolo phone has a 1500mAh battery is quite good, say, it gives you a full day use on social media if that’s what you like to do.

MWEA(MOBILE WEB EAST AFRICA) 2013 HYPED EVENT

It's official: Mobile Web East Africa 2013 will take place at the Southern Sun Mayfair in Nairobi on February 20th and 21st.  The agenda is live on the event website and registration is open, so why not take a minute to have a look at what has been  planned?

92% of the people who came along last year rated MWEA as the best event that they had ever attended and all key players are back on board for 2013.  Plus, they're going to be joined by the likes of MEFiROKO PartnersJunk Mail Publishing and Thought Works, illustrating the growing international feel of the conference.

They will be implementing the popular interactive round table format once again, although this does mean that total capacity at the venue is limited to just 140 attendees.  Due to early registrations they are already more than half full so if you're serious about attending this year I recommend that you register ASAP.  There's a $123 discount available to anyone who reserves their place on or before this Friday, 25th January.

I believe that this will be the best Mobile Web East Africa event yet.  Visit the event website to see why I'm so confident or drop an email for the latest up to date information concerning the Mobile Marketing East Africa Focus Day that will be running.

The Bluetooth Virtual keyboard : Simply a work of TechnoArt.

Infra red and Laser technologies were used to bring about the Bluetooth virtual keyboard. All you need is the micro size device that will project the entire 63 full size keyboard. Detection technology is used to ensure that as soon as you punch the virtual keys, the information is sent to the Bluetooth device that has been connected such as laptops,PDAs, iPad and smart phones.

The portability of this device is particularly catchy because unlike the normal or folding keyboards, it can be carried around with much ease and accommodates up to 450 characters per minute. it contains a rechargeable lithium battery and since it has its own power supply, it doesn't drain other devices. the battery life lasts for about 2-3 hours. It can be used with all sorts of smart phones, Symbian and Palm OS and Windows.

It even has tapping sounds. how cool is that!!

Interesting trends on Apple, Blackberry and Android users.

So...what does your phone say about you? Recently, a study was conducted by a UK firm to compare the habits of Android, Apple and blackberry users concerning their relation to the holiday habits they exercised! Here are some of the interesting statistics that were found:

9% of visitors on traveling related websites were phone users of which:
  • 69% are iPhone users
  • 24% are Android Users
  • 6% Blackberry users.

What does your destination say about you?
  • Other than any other group, iPhone users love to shop and the most likely place they will visit is New York.
  • Android and iPhone users love their tech more compared to Blackberry users and will definitely love to go to techno forward cities such as Tokyo.
  • iPhone users are such cliche lovers and are ten times more likely to visit Paris ( The City of love) than Android and Blackberry users who ranked last.
  • iPhone users are more likely to visit flirtatious cities such as Athens and risky gambling ones like Las Vegas because they are thrill lovers. Blackberry users however, love to play it very safe and will hardly visit destinations such as Afghanistan and Detroit.
  • Surprising enough, Blackberry users are more likely to be the big spenders: splashing out their money when it comes to very expensive holiday destinations.

Relationships on holiday?

  • iPhone users are more likely to go away for a dirty weekend with their partner (51% chance), android users have a 47% likelihood while a blackberry user is the least likely to be enthusiastic about a getaway with their partner and are considered to be unlucky in love.
  • It is more likely for a blackberry user to take their partner on a business trip with android users being last in this category.
  • Also, a blackberry user is most likely to foot the bill on a date with an android user being least likely to do that. hmmm...

Work habits while on holiday?
  • Blackberry users spend 38% more hours than other users searching for flights and holiday destinations during working hours.
  • Blackberry and IPhone users are more likely to indulge in work related chores during their holidays than android users
The study also showed that while Android users are most likely to end up in the sack after a first date, blackberry users would rather sip on their beer.
How true is this survey?

Tips & Tricks to help you save your battery life.

Data hungry mobile android and iPhone users are having severe issues with the battery life they have to deal with. for an interesting comparison of data user trends, click here. to ensure data usage and battery drainage are minimized, here are relevant things to keep in mind:

  • Bluetooth: ensure that its always off if you are not using it. this way, battery life is conserved.
  • Charging : When charging your phone, ensure you do it frequently rather than waiting for it to be close to dead; this is because when it is almost charge-less, the battery will do more work during the charging.

  • Applications : Stay wary of the applications that  forward you with non important messages and keep on blinking or displaying messages on your screen. in so doing, you save a lot of charge.
  • Data hogging applications should also be avoided. A good example is GPS. it will run alongside applications such as twitter for geolocation services. if you have it installed, ensure its off when not in use.
  • Location Applications: these applications will often look for places you currently at and pinpoint it out for the sake of social media mostly. when not in use, turn them off or visit the application settings and turn off location tracking.
  • Syncing Applications : these are the apps that use the push technology eg. email. the best way to deal with this is to ensure that syncing is done less frequently by setting the period to as least frequent as possible.

  • Ringtone Vs. Vibrate : Vibrations tend to use up more battery power than having a vibrant ringtone. therefore  avoid being on vibration at most times.

  • Screen Timeout : Ensure that it is set to the minimal time out period available. the option to set your timeout is on the Settings Menu. this particular setting ensures you dictate the amount of time your phone takes to stay lit after a tap, after receiving input or any other kind of usage.
  • Brightness : Lowering the brightness of your screen will save your charge a lot. this can be done through the settings (Menu> display> Brightness.)

  • WiFi : Ensure that your WiFi is constantly turned off to avoid sniffing on the network since a lot of power is used/ lost through this.

  • Lastly, always monitor your battery performance and usage.( Settings > About phone > Battery use ) This helps in making the best choice concerning what actions to take to save your battery life.

Phone Cases that will drive you Crazy!!!!

A friend of mine sent me some beautiful iPhone case photos that i loved a bit too much. I therefore looked for more designs and inspiration. Some people may view them as being over the top but on the other hand, life is too short to have a boring phone case! ( I said that :-) ). The cases are actually functional since they act as protective barriers against scratches, falls, wear & tear and dust . You can get them to match with what your wearing, get them to go with your moods for the day or to match your boyfriend's outfit if your that kind of girl :-) . I stumbled upon some cool designs;  thought i would share them with you:

and my personal favorite :-) ....

It is possible to customize your android phone case by yourself if you are feeling artsy. All you need is transparent or rubber cases that match the size of your phone. When using transparent cases, you can use paint (on the transparent case) to evoke a design you like or you can stick a picture/graphics/patterns/messages to it that you love/relate to. When using rubber cases, you can use spray adhesives to stick chunks of your old jewelry pieces, buttons and brooches in a design you find appealing. You can incorporate fabric as well by having to recycle old blanket pieces, tweed, leather and denim.
Otherwise, if you want them ready made, you can check at Mr. Price. They have iPhone and Blackberry cases that are absolutely beautiful.
Am on a project aiming to make one for myself. I will share it with you once i am through.

The Aston Martin Transparent Phone Concept: Luxury taken to another Level.

To reflect its understated classiness, Aston Martin is coordinating with Canada's Mobiado company to create a  transparent phone. how incredible!!! This luxury car brand has come up with one of the most revolutionizing concepts: a transparent phone. They are hoping to release it soon. it is intended to run on an Android operating system.

I noticed the whole transparent phone idea when i was watching the last episode of the eighth season of Weeds and found it to be too futuristic, but turns out the future is already here. Aston Martin started releasing phones sometime back with the Aston Martin Aspire being released last year and retailing at about $1500 because of the 24k gold casing.

The transparent screen is acquired by using solid sapphire crystals. both sides of the phone are made of platinum and this is where the Sim cards and electronics will reside to keep in line with the transparency theme. However, the Aston Martin logo as well as the Mobiado logo appear on the screen.

It is intended that the device be used hand in hand with the Aston Martin luxury cars by using the GPRS of the vehicle for foursquare as well as unlocking the doors automatically; acting like a key. It will also have social networking features like Facebook and twitter for easy photo sharing of all the places you visit in your car. A feature that i find really cool is the accelerometer that can be used to indicate precautions such as airbags and seat belt stiffening in case of accidents.

Am too excited about this; even though it is still but a concept. Hoping that it comes through!! Can you estimate how much it would go for?

Am grateful that you stopped by!

Haven't yet switched to Android?? 6 reasons why you should

Android has grown to be one of the most popular platforms throughout the world. A good chunk of mobile and tablet owners use this awesome operating system. if you haven't yet made a switch, let me try convince you to:

  • For developers: since it is an open source software, it offers a chance for its users to be able to develop different kinds of applications and programs which they can post on the Google play store for others to download either for free or at a certain price. i am making it my personal business to publish an application or two this year, hopefully. :-) if i do, you will be the first to know!
  • for users: it is easier to fully customize your phone and enhance its functionality abilities because of the convenient android market that has been set up for its users. There is a lot of variety to suit different preferences and needs.
  • users are able to root their phones and thereby increase their functionality. The rooting process ensures that you are able to alter system files thus utilize your phone's ability through upgrading versions of the operating system and installing altered and customized operating systems. Through this, you can increase functionality through increase in speed and alteration of inbuilt color schemes.
  • for a buyer: this is the perfect platform because of the many hardware devices it supports. you can choose the kind of phone you want since it is supported by a majority of them, tablets as well. you can pick one that is in line with your budget and preferences; style and size.
  • for users: you are able to get a lot of cool widgets on your home-screen and you are given the liberty to customize them in a manner you find suitable. Examples include widgets that show the battery life, weather, notifications from social sites as well as incoming messages.
  • the android community is large, worldwide and helpful in terms of offering support. the many users of this platform have interactive blogs and forums that discuss important issues concerning this particular operating system. lets face it, we all know at least 10 of our friends who use it. that is why it is never hard to get a charging device when your phone is running out of charge. the micro USB port is quite common and can be easily charged.

A Guide to choosing the Best sunscreen.

The heat is crazy. Personally, I avoid leaving the house between 11.00 am and 4.00 pm. Sunscreen is essential for everybody. But before blindly purchasing one, it is important to put in mind important guidelines concerning how to choose the best product for your skin.

  • Ensure that it offers a broad spectrum of protection from both Ultraviolet-A (UVA) and Ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays. The difference between the two is that UVB radiation usually causes more of the sunburns whereas the UVA rays penetrate deeper and lead to premature aging of the skin and cancer.
  • Take a good look at the ingredients present in the sunscreen. It would be wise to avoid those that have oxybenzone and Vitamin A. these chemicals will often act as toxins which can evoke cancer. One of the fastest ways to absorb toxins is through the skin therefore caution is important.
  • A key factor that most people look at is the SPF value. SPF is the Sun Protection Factor. It ranges from 15, 30,45 up to 100+. normally, one will assume the higher the number, the more protection from the UVA rays. however, sun lotions which have higher SPF values of up to 100 can be harmful since they will often scatter and reflect the rays rather than deal with them in a linear fashion. in most instances, an SPF value of 30 will work sufficient enough. no need to blow money on higher SPF values which will require you to keep on reapplying from time to time for the best results.
  • if your debating on getting a spray or a lotion, it is advisable to acquire lotion ; not only is it easy to apply, it also saves you from inhaling chemicals that are potentially dangerous.
  • some products will be manufactured in the U.S while others will be manufactured within the European Union. since those manufactured in Europe are allowed to use more ingredients in the manufacturing process, they tend to offer better protection from the UVA and UVB rays in comparison to those made in the states.
  • ensure that the bottle indicates that the product is water resistant. if it doesn't, then it probably isn't. this is important because it ensures that the sunscreen maintains its effectiveness especially if you plan to do exercises or swim.
  • after making the purchase, it is wise that you apply it everyday whether it is sunny or not because even on cloudy days, UV rays can still penetrate through your skin.and if you are in the sun for a period longer than two hours, you should ensure you keep on reapplying it after 2 hours.

Personally, i use the Cyclax spf 45 suncreen and it works fine. I particularly love it because it is water resistant, anti-oxidant, has UVA/UVB rays protection and Aloe Vera as well. just perfect! you can check out sunscreens from brands such as Nivea, L'oreal, Mac, Vichy, Clinique, Olay and Aveeno.
